Project Hummingbird is on a mission to prevent violence. Our team works with a network of experts in behavioral threat analysis, crisis communications, de-escalation, and constructive conflict to bring this life-saving training to people that need it most.  Our goal is to provide affordable, accessible, and easy-to-understand training to prevent physical harm.

 From the Founder

I started project Hummingbird to address a critical need – teaching people how to stay safe. As an FBI agent, I had the benefit of receiving some of the best training in the world. We were taught the importance of good situational awareness and how to avoid potentially dangerous situations by always keeping our “head on a swivel.” I found myself using these skills both on and off duty, and teaching them to everyone I knew from my nieces to my neighbors. I discovered that my ability to detect and avoid threats was out to be far more useful than many other skills I learned such as firearms and defensive tactics.

I was never the fastest or strongest agent, and I knew it was unlikely to out-run or out-fight an opponents. Considering that dealing with hostile people was part of my job description, I knew I had to rely on my words and my wits to survive. Through many mistakes and near misses, I developed my own de-escalation toolbox to help prevent a hostile situation from becoming a dangerous one.

As I progressed in my career, I received more specialty training in behavioral risk assessment - specifically, on the behavior patterns of mass shooters.  It struck me as odd that while any of us can be a victim, so few of us are trained to detect and thus prevent it these horrific attacks. I I knew in my gut that threat detection should and could not be a “specialty skill,” and started a quest to spread the knowledge as far as possible.

As a Corporate Security professional, my instinct that education is the key to prevention was affirmed by countless examples. Despite what it said in the job description, I spent the vast majority of my time coaching people on how to avoid a dangerous situation altogether, as opposed to merely responding to them.

The courses offered here are the result of that journey. They combine decades of training, experience, and lessons learned, delivered in a format that anyone can understand  and designed to have maximum impact. This work is not my job, it is my passion.
